Which Romantasy Named Blade Would Sweep You Off Your Feet?

Which romantasy series has the best named blade?

In romantasy, a sword is rarely just a sword. Sometimes it’s a flaming heirloom, a death-dealing truth-seeker, or a cursed relic forged from star metal. But more than that, it often becomes a character in its own right. A sword is the perfect weapon for beheading enemies, or turning enemies to lovers. That’s right, in romantasy, a named blade is sure to bring the drama. So which named romantasy blade would sweep you off your feet? And which would you choose to slay your enemies, or choose your next romantic interest?

So which named romantasy blade would sweep you off your feet?

Many of the biggest romantasy series feature at least one named blade that changes the narrative, alters the plot, or brings our couple together.

Alexis- Mead Mishaps Series (Kimberly Lemming)

The Mead Mishaps Series are laugh out loud rom-com fantasy books and here you will find a fiercely opinionated, enchanted sword. Forged from a demon‑cursed metal, Alexis not only speaks, but snarls, sasses, and often steals the scene. As well as being a trusty weapon for Ruby, Alexis makes a sharp-witted companion who cracks jokes and calls out distractions during dangerous moments. If you like your romantasy blades with attitude, sass and a strong role, you’ll love Alexis. You can find her in the Mistlefoe novella, and the "That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted A Love Potion At A Werewolf" novel.

The Sword of Tyrrendor- The Empyrean Series (Rebecca Yarros)

Taking on more of a traditional fantasy role, the Sword of Tyrrendor sounds like something you might find locked in a vault, cursed with blood magic and bound to a dark prophecy, and honestly, you wouldn’t be far wrong. This blade, once belonging to Xaden Riorson’s father, turns up in cryptic visions and unsettling dreams throughout Onyx Storm, radiating “deadly family heirloom” energy.

The Blade of Aretia- The Empyrean Series (Rebecca Yarros)

The Blade of Aretia also appears in Onyx Storm, the second book in the Empyrean series. It is a ceremonial dagger linked to Tyrrendor’s royal lineage. Though not a primary weapon, it is an important part of the political maneuvering within the plot. And, even more notably for romantasy fans, this dagger is thought by fans to play a role in the creation of Violet’s engagement ring, tying the blade to both Xaden’s heritage and their relationship. So for its small size, this dagger makes a big impact.

Goldryn- Throne of Glass Series (Sarah J. Maas)

A legendary and iconic sword, Goldryn is literally a scene stealer. With its ruby pommel and golden hilt, it’s got the kind of aesthetic that every other sword would wish for. But it’s as deadly as it is flashy. Bursting into flames in battle, Goldryn has a soul-deep bond with its wielder and plays a massive part in the final showdown.

Damaris- Throne of Glass Series (Sarah J. Maas)

The “Sword of Truth” might sound like a disappointment when you compare it with Goldryn, but this is the real deal. Crucial for the plot as well as character development, Damaris is a sword that can reveal truth. When the in-book universe is full of schemes, glamours and lies, this kind of power is essential. Sleek, ancient, and wrapped in royal lore, Damaris is less flashy than Goldryn but arguably more important. It’s like the quieter but wiser older sibling of the sword world.

Windcleaver, Nothung, and the Sword of Orynth- Throne of Glass Series (Sarah J. Maas)

While we’ve already covered two named blades from this series, it would be remiss of us not to even mention the others. Especially when they all play an important role.

  • Windcleaver is Manon’s terrifying witch blade, slicing through skies and spines with equal ease.
  • Nothung exudes cursed vibes, nothing more to see here.
  • The Sword of Orynth is simple, noble and tied to Terrasen’s history. It’s the kind of sword you inherit with a crown and a very long to-do list.

Ataraxia- A Court of Silver Flames, From A Court of Thorns and Roses Series (Sarah J. Maas)

Like a little magic with your sword wielding? Well, how about a sword forged by the FMC herself? Sure Nesta might be a little sharp herself, but that’s nothing compared to her soul-blade Ataraxia. The name means “calmness” or “freedom from disturbance,” which is deeply ironic given how violently she uses it. Jokes aside, it's a beautiful homage to character development, healing, and inner strength.

Truth-Teller- A Court of Thorns and Roses Series (Sarah J. Maas)

Truth-Teller is Azriel’s trusty shadow-dagger, forged from the same star metal as the legendary Gwydion (which we’ll discuss below). It doesn’t lie. It doesn’t miss. And fans are obsessed with it being one half of a legendary set. Azriel is one of the characters we haven’t yet met in detail within this series, and that makes Truth-Teller all the more mysterious. For a blade that doesn’t lie, it sure is hiding plenty of secrets.

Gwydion- Crescent City Series (Sarah J. Maas)

Gwydion is Truth-Teller’s mysterious twin blade, crafted from iridium (a fallen star metal, because of course it is). While Truth-Teller is all about shadows and stealth, Gwydion is luminous, royal, and tied to the Asteri’s long-forgotten myths. It’s wielded by Bryce Quinlan (eventually), but it’s more than an ordinary sword (it’s made from star metal after all). It’s a key, a memory, and a plot twister.

The Immortal Blade- Five Crowns of Okrith Series (A.K. Mulford)

In The Witch’s Blade, book two of the Five Crowns of Okrith series, the Immortal Blade is the catalyst of the plot. The blade’s name reflects both its feared potency and its legacy, and it symbolises unending influence and power. Rua's struggle to master the Immortal Blade becomes a key part of her character journey, intertwining with emerging political alliances and her developing bond with the Northern king. It’s very morally grey. Very romantasy. Very much what you want from a sword that is central to the plot.

Special Mentions: Sometimes a Blade Doesn’t Have a Name

A blade doesn't always have to have a name to be a crucial part of the plot. Don’t believe us, check out:

Oraya’s Poisoned Dagger- Crowns of Nyaxia Series (Carissa Broadbent)

Oraya’s dagger is as iconic as any named blade on this list. Laced with poison and sharpened for betrayal, it’s sleek, deadly, and entirely on-brand for our favourite reluctant vampire princess. It may be small, but the emotional damage it causes? Massive. Sometimes, it’s not the size of the weapon, it’s the angst it delivers.

Poppy’s Bloodstone Dagger- From Blood and Ash Series (Jennifer L. Armentrout)

If we’re discussing daggers and blades in romantasy, it would be a mistake to leave out the stabbiest FMC that ever did stab, even if it’s not with a named blade. Poppy’s bloodstone dagger is crucial to the plot, and the romance, and it reflects Poppy’s growth and self-reliance throughout the series.
