Overview

The Otherwhere Post by Emily J. Taylor is a standalone YA dark-academia fantasy. It follows Maeve Abenthy, who’s lived under an alias since her father was blamed for a world-ending catastrophe. When she receives an anonymous letter declaring, “Your father was innocent,” Maeve joins the mysterious Otherwhere Post to learn scriptomancy. This is magical letter-writing that can cross worlds, and uncover the truth.

Magic

Scriptomancy is an inventive and richly layered form of magic. From ink-based spells to creatures formed from writing, the magic is fresh and intriguing. 

Setting

Crumbling libraries and haunted academic buildings deliver the perfect dark academia vibe.

Mystery

There’s a central whodunit that propels the narrative: was Maeve’s father truly at fault, or is something more sinister at play? The puzzle unfolds with care, rewarding readers.

Characters and romance

Maeve is a strong heroine with plenty of layers. She’s wary, independent, yet quietly yearning for connection. Her slow-burn dynamic with her mentor Tristan brings wit, tension, and warmth. Secondary characters like feisty roommate Nan add levity, although it would be nice if these were developed further.
